How to Install Add-ons on Bedrock Edition

Step-by-step instructions for installing add-ons, behavior packs, and resource packs on every Bedrock platform.

File Types

Bedrock add-ons come in several file formats:

  • .mcpack - A single resource pack or behavior pack. Double-click or tap to import directly into Minecraft.
  • .mcaddon - A bundle containing one or more .mcpack files. Imports all packs at once.
  • .zip - Some add-ons are distributed as ZIP files. You may need to rename or extract them.

Installation on Windows 10/11

  1. Download the .mcpack or .mcaddon file.
  2. Double-click the file. Minecraft should open automatically and import the pack.
  3. If that does not work, rename the file extension from .zip to .mcpack (if applicable).
  4. Alternatively, manually copy the extracted folder to:
    %localappdata%\Packages\Microsoft.MinecraftUWP_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalState\games\com.mojang\resource_packs\
    or
    %localappdata%\Packages\Microsoft.MinecraftUWP_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalState\games\com.mojang\behavior_packs\
  5. Open Minecraft, go to Settings and then Storage/Global Resources to verify the pack imported correctly.
  6. To apply to a world, edit the world settings and add the pack under Resource Packs or Behavior Packs.

Installation on iOS

  1. Download the .mcpack or .mcaddon file using Safari or another browser.
  2. When prompted, choose "Open in Minecraft" from the share sheet.
  3. Minecraft will launch and import the pack automatically.
  4. If the file downloads to the Files app instead, tap it and select Minecraft as the app to open it with.
  5. Apply the pack to your world through world settings.

Installation on Android

  1. Download the .mcpack or .mcaddon file.
  2. Tap the downloaded file. Your device should offer to open it with Minecraft.
  3. If Minecraft does not appear as an option, use a file manager to navigate to the file and open it with Minecraft.
  4. Alternatively, manually copy the extracted pack folder to:
    /storage/emulated/0/Android/data/com.mojang.minecraftpe/files/games/com.mojang/resource_packs/
    or
    /storage/emulated/0/Android/data/com.mojang.minecraftpe/files/games/com.mojang/behavior_packs/
  5. Note: On newer Android versions, the Android/data folder may be restricted. You may need a file manager with the appropriate permissions.

Installation on Xbox

Installing add-ons on Xbox is more limited:

  • Marketplace: The easiest way is to purchase or download free packs from the Minecraft Marketplace.
  • Realm sync: If a Realm has add-ons applied, they download automatically when you join.
  • USB transfer: Some players transfer worlds with add-ons from a Windows PC to Xbox via USB or cloud saves.

Installation on Nintendo Switch

The Switch has similar limitations to Xbox. Marketplace content and Realm-synced packs are the primary methods. There is no direct file system access for sideloading add-ons without workarounds.

Installation on PlayStation

PlayStation follows the same pattern as Xbox and Switch. Marketplace and Realm sync are the supported methods. File system access is not available to users.

Applying to a World

Once a pack is imported into Minecraft:

  1. Go to the Play screen and select your world.
  2. Click the edit (pencil) icon.
  3. Scroll down to Resource Packs or Behavior Packs.
  4. Find your imported pack in the "Available" list and click the + button to activate it.
  5. Reorder packs if needed. Packs higher in the list have higher priority.
  6. Save and enter the world.

Applying Globally

Resource packs can be applied globally so they affect all worlds:

  1. Go to Settings, then Storage or Global Resources.
  2. Activate the resource pack from the available list.
  3. This pack now applies to every world unless overridden by world-specific settings.

Troubleshooting

  • If a pack shows as "incompatible," the pack may target a different Minecraft version. Check if an updated version is available.
  • If the game crashes after applying a pack, remove it by editing world settings or deleting the pack folder from the file system.
  • Ensure behavior packs and resource packs from the same add-on are both activated. Some add-ons require both to function correctly.
  • If textures are missing or purple/black, the resource pack may be corrupted or incomplete. Re-download it.
