Gold Farm in Minecraft Bedrock Edition
Build a gold farm in Bedrock Edition using Nether portal mechanics and Zombified Piglin spawning, with Bedrock-specific designs.
Overview
Gold farms are essential for obtaining gold ingots, gold nuggets, and XP in large quantities. In Java Edition, gold farms typically exploit Zombified Piglin spawning on Nether roof portals or in the Nether wastes biome. Bedrock Edition requires a fundamentally different approach because the Nether roof is not accessible and spawning mechanics work differently. This guide covers how to build an effective gold farm in Bedrock.
Why Bedrock Gold Farms Are Different
Several Bedrock-specific mechanics force a different farm design:
- The Nether roof (Y=128) is bedrock in Bedrock Edition and cannot be broken or built on. Java players commonly build gold farms above the Nether roof, but this is impossible in Bedrock.
- Bedrock uses density-based mob spawning. There is no global mob cap to exploit by spawn-proofing large areas.
- Zombified Piglins spawned from Nether portals behave slightly differently in Bedrock. Portal-based farms work but at different rates.
- Aggro mechanics for Zombified Piglins are the same in principle (hit one and all nearby ones attack), but the aggro range and group behavior differ slightly.
Design 1: Nether Portal Farm (Overworld)
This design uses Nether portals built in the Overworld to spawn Zombified Piglins. It works in both editions but is particularly popular in Bedrock because it avoids Nether-specific spawning issues.
Materials Needed
- Obsidian (enough for multiple portal frames, typically 40-80 portals).
- Building blocks for platforms.
- Trident with Channeling (for a Trident-kill variant) or fall damage setup.
- Hoppers and chests for collection.
- Turtle eggs (to attract Zombified Piglins).
Build Steps
- Choose a location in the Overworld, ideally at a high Y level (above Y=200) to reduce interference from cave spawns.
- Build a large platform and place multiple Nether portal frames on it. Each portal frame should be the minimum 4x5 obsidian frame. Space them 1 block apart for maximum portal density.
- Light all the portals. Zombified Piglins spawn inside lit Nether portals in the Overworld at a slow but steady rate.
- Place turtle eggs on the platform near the portals. Zombified Piglins (like all zombies) are attracted to turtle eggs and will pathfind toward them. Use this to guide them off the platform.
- Build a collection funnel below the turtle eggs that channels the Piglins into a drop shaft.
- At the bottom of the shaft, use a 23-block drop to bring them to one-hit health, then use a manual kill for XP or an automatic kill method for AFK farming.
- Place hoppers below the kill area feeding into chests to collect gold nuggets, gold ingots, golden swords, and rotten flesh.
Design 2: Nether Wastes Farm
Building directly in the Nether can yield higher spawn rates since Zombified Piglins spawn naturally in the Nether wastes biome.
Build Steps
- Find a large Nether wastes biome.
- Build spawning platforms at multiple Y levels within the biome. Each platform should be at least 15x15 blocks.
- Use trapdoors on the platform edges. Zombified Piglins see trapdoors as solid blocks and walk over them, falling off the edge.
- Channel all falling Piglins into a central kill chamber using water (in the Overworld collection area) or lava-based damage in the Nether.
- Since water cannot be placed in the Nether, use magma blocks or entity cramming for the kill method, or transport them through a portal to the Overworld for water-based collection.
Aggro and Kill Methods
Zombified Piglins are neutral until provoked. For manual XP farms, hit one Piglin and all others within roughly 40 blocks become aggressive and swarm you. Build a safe hitting platform where you can strike them without taking damage. A one-block gap below a slab lets you hit their feet while they cannot reach you.
For automatic farms, use fall damage (23 blocks for one-hit), magma blocks, entity cramming (24+ entities in one block), or campfire damage. Each method has trade-offs between speed, item collection, and XP generation. Note that only player kills or trident kills with Channeling during a thunderstorm award XP in Bedrock.
Spawn Rate Optimization
- More portals mean more spawns in the portal-based design. 40 portals is a good starting point.
- In the Nether, remove blocks above and around your platforms to maximize valid spawning surfaces on your farm.
- Stay within simulation distance of the farm at all times.
- Use a ticking area if the farm needs to run while you are away.
Expected Output
A 40-portal Overworld farm produces roughly 100-200 gold nuggets per hour. A large Nether wastes farm with multiple spawning platforms can produce 300-600 gold nuggets per hour. Rates vary with simulation distance and nearby spawning surfaces.
Java vs Bedrock Differences
- Java farms above the Nether roof are the most efficient gold farms in the game but are impossible in Bedrock.
- Java's global mob cap allows spawn-proofing to massively boost rates. Bedrock's density system does not work the same way.
- Portal spawning rates are different between editions, with Java generally spawning more Piglins per portal per tick.
- The aggro range for Zombified Piglins is similar but group behavior and de-aggro timing differ slightly.
FAQ
Can I build on the Nether roof in Bedrock?
No. The Nether roof is solid bedrock in Bedrock Edition and cannot be broken through. All Nether farms must be built below Y=128.
Do I get XP from automatic kills?
No. In Bedrock, XP only drops when a player or a charged Trident kills the mob. For XP, use a manual kill method or a Trident killer.
Why are Zombified Piglins ignoring my turtle eggs?
Ensure the turtle eggs are placed on a block the Piglins can pathfind to. If there are obstacles or the eggs are on a different elevation, the pathfinding may fail. Also verify the eggs are not yet hatched.
