Bedrock Iron Golem Farm: Design and Build Guide

Build an efficient iron golem farm in Bedrock Edition, accounting for the unique spawning mechanics that differ from Java.

How Iron Golem Spawning Works in Bedrock

Iron golem spawning in Bedrock Edition is fundamentally different from Java Edition. Understanding these mechanics is critical for building a functional farm:

  • Iron golems spawn as part of village mechanics. A valid village is required.
  • The spawning requirements involve villagers sleeping and waking, villager panic, and the time of day cycle.
  • Villagers must have slept recently (within the last in-game day) and be able to path to their beds.
  • A villager who is panicked (has detected a hostile mob) can trigger a golem spawn faster.
  • The village must have at least 10 beds and 20 villagers for optimal spawning rates, though smaller setups can work.
  • Only one iron golem can exist per village at a time (in unmodified Bedrock). Additional golems only spawn if the existing one is killed.

Basic Farm Design

A basic Bedrock iron farm consists of:

  1. Villager pod: An enclosed area containing at least 20 villagers with access to beds. The villagers need to be able to sleep at night and stand up during the day.
  2. Bed array: At least 10 beds that villagers can claim. The beds should be arranged so villagers can reach them.
  3. Spawning platform: A flat area where the iron golem will spawn. This must be within the village boundary and near the villagers.
  4. Kill chamber: A system to push the golem off the platform and kill it, collecting the iron drops. Lava blade systems are efficient.
  5. Scare mechanism: A zombie or other hostile mob that can "scare" the villagers without reaching them, accelerating golem spawns.

Step-by-Step Build

1. Prepare the Location

Choose a flat area away from any existing villages (at least 100 blocks). If other villages are nearby, their beds and villagers can interfere with your farm's village mechanics.

2. Build the Villager Pod

Create a 5x5 or larger enclosed room with the following:

  • 20 beds arranged in rows (two high if needed to save space).
  • 20 villagers. Transport them using minecarts or boats from a nearby village.
  • At least 20 workstations (any type) so villagers have professions.
  • Ensure the ceiling is high enough that villagers can stand on beds and get off them.

3. Build the Spawning Platform

Place a flat platform at the same Y level as the villager pod or slightly below. The platform should be made of solid, full blocks (not slabs or transparent blocks). Iron golems need a 2x2 area of solid blocks to spawn on and 3 blocks of air above.

4. Create the Kill Chamber

Below the spawning platform, create a channel that pushes the golem to a killing point:

  • Use water streams to push the golem along a channel.
  • End the channel with a lava blade (a block of lava flowing over a half-slab) that damages the golem while allowing drops to pass through.
  • Place hoppers beneath the collection point to gather iron ingots and poppies.

5. Add a Scare Mechanism

Place a zombie within sight of the villagers but unable to reach them:

  • A name-tagged zombie (to prevent despawning) in a minecart or behind a fence works well.
  • Position it so villagers can see it through openings but the zombie cannot pathfind to them.
  • The zombie causes villagers to panic, which triggers more frequent golem spawn checks.

Optimizing Production

  • Kill the golem as quickly as possible. The next golem cannot spawn until the current one is dead.
  • Ensure villagers have a clear line of sight to the zombie for consistent panic behavior.
  • Make sure the spawning platform is the only valid spawn location within the village boundary.
  • Light up the surrounding area to prevent other hostile mobs from interfering.
  • Use a ticking area to keep the farm active when you are not nearby.

Expected Rates

A well-built Bedrock iron farm produces approximately 40-50 iron ingots per hour. This is significantly less than Java iron farms (which can produce hundreds per hour) due to the single-golem-per-village limit. Some players build multiple independent villages side by side to multiply production, but each village must be far enough apart to avoid merging.

Troubleshooting

  • If golems are not spawning, verify that villagers are sleeping at night and waking up.
  • Check that the spawning platform is within the village boundary (the area defined by bed positions).
  • Ensure no other iron golem exists within the village. Sometimes a golem spawns in an unexpected location.
  • If villages merge, the farm breaks. Maintain at least 100 blocks between village centers.
  • If villagers lose their beds, they stop triggering golem spawns. Make sure beds are accessible and not obstructed.
