Free Bedrock Skins: Where to Find Them

Find free skins, skin editors, and community resources for customizing your Minecraft Bedrock Edition character.

Free Skins Built Into Bedrock

Minecraft Bedrock Edition comes with several free skin options out of the box:

  • Steve and Alex: The classic default skins available on all platforms.
  • Character Creator basics: A selection of free body parts, hair styles, facial features, and basic outfits in the Character Creator.
  • Free Marketplace skins: Mojang occasionally releases free skin packs through the Marketplace, often tied to events, holidays, or game updates. Check the Marketplace regularly for new free content.

Community Skin Sites

Several community websites offer free Minecraft skins that work with Bedrock Edition:

The Skindex

One of the largest Minecraft skin databases. Users upload and share skins that can be downloaded as PNG files. The site includes a built-in skin editor for creating and modifying skins directly in the browser. Skins downloaded from The Skindex work on Bedrock (Windows, iOS, Android) by importing the PNG file through the game's Classic Skins section.

NameMC

Primarily a Java Edition skin site, but the skins are standard PNG files that work on Bedrock as well. NameMC has a large collection organized by tags and popularity. You can browse trending skins or search for specific themes.

Planet Minecraft

A long-running Minecraft community site with thousands of user-created skins. Skins are available for free download and include preview images showing how they look in-game. The site also hosts texture packs, maps, and mods.

MCPEDL

A site focused on Bedrock Edition content. While primarily known for add-ons and maps, MCPEDL also hosts skin packs formatted specifically for Bedrock. These often come as .mcpack files for easy one-click installation.

Skin Editors

If you want to create your own skin from scratch or modify an existing one, several free tools are available:

Skindex Editor

A browser-based skin editor that works directly on The Skindex website. Draw on the skin template in 2D or rotate the 3D model to paint from any angle. Export the finished skin as a PNG file.

Nova Skin

A feature-rich browser-based editor with layers, color pickers, and template overlays. Supports both 64x64 and 64x32 skin formats. Includes a gallery of community skins that you can use as starting points.

Minecraft Skin Editor (Mobile Apps)

Several free mobile apps let you create and edit skins directly on your phone or tablet, then apply them to Minecraft Bedrock. Look for well-reviewed apps with direct Minecraft export features in your device's app store.

How to Apply Free Skins

Once you have a skin PNG file:

  1. Open Minecraft Bedrock Edition.
  2. Go to the Profile/Dressing Room (hanger icon).
  3. Select "Classic Skins."
  4. Choose the import/browse option.
  5. Select your downloaded PNG file.
  6. Choose the arm model (Classic or Slim).
  7. The skin applies to your character across all platforms via your Microsoft account.

Remember that console players (Xbox, PlayStation, Switch) cannot import custom PNG skins directly. They are limited to the Character Creator, Marketplace purchases, and content that syncs through Realms or world transfers.

Skin Pack Format for Bedrock

If you want to bundle multiple skins together (for sharing with friends or a server community), Bedrock supports skin packs:

  • Create a folder containing your skin PNG files.
  • Add a manifest.json with a "skin_pack" module type.
  • Add a skins.json file listing each skin with its file name, display name, and geometry type.
  • ZIP the folder and rename it to .mcpack for easy distribution.

This is how Marketplace skin packs are structured, and you can create your own for personal use or sharing within your community.

Tips

  • Always download skins from reputable sites to avoid malware or inappropriate content.
  • Skin files should be exactly 64x64 or 64x32 pixels. Other sizes will not work.
  • If a skin looks wrong in-game, you may have selected the wrong model type (Classic vs Slim).
  • Your skin is visible to all players in multiplayer, so choose something appropriate for the servers you play on.
