How to Change Your Skin in Bedrock Edition
Step-by-step guide to changing your Minecraft skin on every Bedrock platform, including custom skins and the character creator.
Two Skin Systems
Bedrock Edition has two ways to customize your character's appearance: the Character Creator and classic skins. The Character Creator lets you build a look piece by piece (head, body, arms, legs, accessories). Classic skins use a single image file applied to a 3D player model, similar to how Java Edition handles skins.
Using the Character Creator
- Open Minecraft Bedrock Edition and go to the main menu.
- Click the hanger icon (Profile/Dressing Room) at the bottom of the screen.
- Select "Character Creator" from the available options.
- Choose body type, skin color, hair style, facial features, and outfit pieces.
- Some items are free, others are purchased from the Marketplace with Minecoins.
- When finished, click "Save" and your character updates across all platforms linked to your Microsoft account.
The Character Creator is available on all Bedrock platforms and your customizations sync through your Microsoft account.
Applying a Classic Skin
Windows 10/11
- Find a skin you like from a trusted website. The skin should be a PNG image file (64x64 or 64x32 pixels).
- Open Minecraft and go to the Profile/Dressing Room.
- Select "Classic Skins" and click the blank skin option or "Owned" tab.
- Click "Choose New Skin" or the import option.
- Browse to the downloaded PNG file and select it.
- Choose the model type (Classic for 4-pixel arms, Slim for 3-pixel arms).
- The skin applies immediately.
iOS
- Download the skin PNG file to your device (save it to Photos or Files).
- Open Minecraft and go to the Profile/Dressing Room.
- Select "Classic Skins" and tap the import/browse option.
- Navigate to the saved PNG file and select it.
- Choose the arm model type and apply.
Android
- Download the skin PNG to your device.
- Open Minecraft and navigate to the Profile/Dressing Room.
- Select "Classic Skins" and use the import feature.
- Browse to the PNG file in your downloads folder.
- Select the model type and apply.
Xbox, PlayStation, and Switch
Console editions have more limited skin options. You can use:
- The Character Creator (available on all platforms).
- Skin packs purchased from the Marketplace.
- Skin packs that come with DLC content.
Direct custom skin file imports are not available on console platforms through the standard interface. Some workarounds exist using Realms or world transfers from PC.
Marketplace Skin Packs
The Minecraft Marketplace offers curated skin packs created by professional designers. These include themed collections (medieval, sci-fi, holiday, pop culture inspired). Skin packs are purchased with Minecoins and work on all Bedrock platforms linked to your account.
Some skin packs include custom geometry (4D skins) that change the shape of the player model, adding capes, wings, tails, or other features. These use Bedrock's custom geometry system and are exclusive to the Marketplace.
Skin File Format
If you want to create your own skin or download one from a community site:
- The file must be a PNG image.
- Standard resolution is 64x64 pixels (supports the full model including overlay layers).
- Legacy 64x32 pixel skins are still supported but do not include overlay layers or slim arm support.
- Transparent pixels are rendered as see-through on the model.
- The skin template layout follows the same mapping as Java Edition skins.
Tips
- Your skin syncs across all devices through your Microsoft account. Change it once and it updates everywhere.
- Some servers have their own skin systems that may override your personal skin.
- If your skin appears as Steve/Alex after applying, try restarting the game.
- HD skins (128x128 or higher) are supported through the Marketplace but not through custom imports on all platforms.
