How to Set Up a Minecraft Realm

Step-by-step guide to creating, configuring, inviting players, and managing a Minecraft Bedrock Realm.

Creating Your Realm

  1. Open Minecraft Bedrock Edition and sign in with your Microsoft account.
  2. From the main menu, click "Play" and then navigate to the "Realms" or "Create New" section.
  3. Select "Create Realm" or "Subscribe to Realms."
  4. Choose your subscription tier (Realms or Realms Plus).
  5. Enter a name for your Realm.
  6. Accept the terms and complete the purchase through your platform's store (Microsoft Store, App Store, Google Play, etc.).
  7. The Realm is created and you are taken to the world settings.

Configuring World Settings

After creating the Realm, configure the world to your liking:

  • Game mode: Survival, Creative, or Adventure.
  • Difficulty: Peaceful, Easy, Normal, or Hard.
  • World type: Default, Flat, or use a specific seed.
  • Cheats: Enable or disable commands. Note that enabling cheats disables achievements.
  • Game rules: Configure keep inventory, mob griefing, fire spread, PvP, and other game rules.

These settings can be changed at any time through the Realm management interface.

Inviting Players

  1. Open the Realm settings by clicking the pencil icon next to your Realm name.
  2. Go to the "Members" or "Invite" section.
  3. There are several ways to invite players:
    • By gamertag: Enter the player's Xbox gamertag to send a direct invitation.
    • By link: Generate a shareable invite link that anyone can use to join.
    • By code: Generate a Realm code that players can enter in the game.
  4. Set the invited player's permission level: Visitor, Member, or Operator.

Invited players do not need their own Realms subscription. Only the Realm owner pays for the subscription.

Managing Players

As the Realm owner, you can:

  • Promote or demote players between Visitor, Member, and Operator roles.
  • Remove players from the Realm.
  • Block specific players from rejoining.
  • View who is currently online.

Permission levels:

  • Visitor: Can look around but cannot build or interact with the world.
  • Member: Can build, mine, and interact normally. The standard level for friends.
  • Operator: Can use commands and manage world settings. Give this only to trusted players.

Uploading an Existing World

To upload a world you have been playing locally:

  1. Go to the Realm settings.
  2. Select one of the world slots (Realms Plus has 3 slots).
  3. Choose "Replace World" or "Upload World."
  4. Select the local world you want to upload.
  5. Wait for the upload to complete. This can take several minutes for large worlds.

The uploaded world replaces whatever was in that slot. Make sure to back up the existing Realm world first if you want to keep it.

Downloading the Realm World

To get a copy of the Realm's world:

  1. Go to the Realm settings.
  2. Select the active world slot.
  3. Choose "Download World."
  4. The world downloads to your local device as a new world entry.

This is useful for local backups, sharing the world with others, or continuing to play if you cancel the subscription.

Applying Add-ons

  1. Download the add-on to the device where you manage the Realm.
  2. Import the add-on into Minecraft (it should appear in your available packs).
  3. Go to the Realm settings and edit the active world.
  4. Scroll to Resource Packs or Behavior Packs.
  5. Activate the desired packs.
  6. Save the changes. All players will need to accept the packs when they join.

Backups and Restoration

Realms automatically creates backups at regular intervals. To manage backups:

  1. Go to the Realm settings.
  2. Select "Backups" or "World Backup."
  3. View the list of available backups with timestamps.
  4. Select a backup and choose "Restore" to revert the world to that point.
  5. You can also download specific backups to your local device.

Backups are retained for a limited period (varies by platform and subscription status). Download important backups locally for long-term storage.

Canceling Your Subscription

If you cancel the Realms subscription:

  • The Realm remains accessible until the current billing period ends.
  • After expiry, the world is preserved for a limited time (typically 18 months).
  • If you resubscribe within that period, your world data is restored.
  • Download the world before canceling to keep a permanent local copy.
