Realms vs Dedicated Server: Which Should You Choose?

Compare Minecraft Realms and dedicated servers across cost, performance, features, and management complexity.

The Core Difference

Realms is a managed service where Mojang handles everything. A dedicated server gives you full control but requires technical knowledge. The right choice depends on your group size, technical comfort, and feature requirements.

Cost Comparison

Realms

  • Fixed monthly subscription with no setup fees.
  • Cost is the same regardless of your usage.
  • Includes Marketplace content with Realms Plus.
  • Only one subscription needed (the owner pays, players join free).

Dedicated Server (Self-Hosted)

  • No recurring cost if you host at home (just electricity).
  • Requires a computer that stays on 24/7.
  • Internet bandwidth and a stable connection are needed.
  • Hardware maintenance is your responsibility.

Dedicated Server (Paid Hosting)

  • Monthly cost varies by provider and resources (RAM, CPU, storage).
  • Can be cheaper than Realms for larger groups (10+ players).
  • Can be more expensive for very small groups.
  • Usually includes basic DDoS protection and backups.

Performance

Realms

Realms performance is generally adequate for casual play with a few friends. However, large builds, extensive redstone, or many entities can cause lag. You have no control over the hardware or configuration to optimize performance. Server location is assigned by Mojang and may result in high latency for some players.

Dedicated Server

A dedicated server gives you full control over performance tuning. You can choose server hardware, adjust view distance, simulation distance, and entity limits. With a VPS or dedicated machine, you get guaranteed resources that are not shared with other customers. You can also choose a server location close to your player base for minimum latency.

Features

Realms

  • Simple setup with no technical knowledge needed.
  • Automatic backups and world management through the game client.
  • Cross-play works automatically between all Bedrock platforms.
  • Up to 10 simultaneous players (Realms Plus).
  • 3 world slots to swap between different worlds.
  • Basic add-on support (resource and behavior packs).
  • No plugin support.

Dedicated Server

  • Unlimited player slots (limited by hardware).
  • Full plugin support with PocketMine or Nukkit.
  • Custom server software options (BDS, PocketMine, Nukkit).
  • Complete control over server.properties and all settings.
  • Ability to run scripts, scheduled tasks, and automated management.
  • Multiple worlds with teleportation between them.
  • Custom anti-cheat, economy, and permission systems.
  • Integration with Discord bots, web panels, and external tools.

Management

Realms

All management is done through the Minecraft game client. No terminal, no SSH, no file transfers. This is incredibly simple but limits what you can do. Managing backups, permissions, and world settings takes just a few clicks.

Dedicated Server

Requires varying levels of technical knowledge depending on the setup. Using a hosting provider with a web panel reduces complexity significantly. Self-hosting requires familiarity with operating systems, networking, and server administration. Updates, backups, and security patches are your responsibility (though many hosts automate these).

Security

Realms

Mojang handles all security. You do not need to worry about DDoS attacks, unauthorized access, or server exploits. Player authentication is handled through Microsoft/Xbox accounts.

Dedicated Server

You are responsible for security. This includes keeping server software updated, configuring firewalls, setting up DDoS protection (if self-hosting), and managing player permissions. Paid hosting providers typically handle basic security measures for you.

Recommendation Matrix

  • 2-5 casual friends: Realms. The simplicity and automatic cross-play are worth the cost.
  • 5-10 regular players: Either Realms Plus or a basic hosting plan. If you need plugins or more control, go with a hosted server.
  • 10-50 players: A hosted dedicated server or VPS. Realms cannot support this many concurrent players.
  • 50+ players or public server: Dedicated server with professional hosting. Consider Paper + GeyserMC for both Java and Bedrock support.
  • Children playing with friends: Realms. The safety, simplicity, and parental controls make it the best choice for younger players.

Can You Switch Later?

Yes. You can download your Realm world and upload it to a dedicated server at any time. Going the other direction (server to Realm) is also possible by uploading the world file. Your builds and progress are portable between the two options.
